Norwalk was purchased in 1640, and chartered as a town in 1651. During the Revolutionary War, the town was almost completely destroyed by the British troops, with only six houses left standing.
Norwalk is a city of many diverse neighborhoods, each benefiting from a style and vibe that meshes modern living with a historic past. Popular for young professionals and families, Norwalk offers the sought-after suburban lifestyle with easy access to a lively downtown, New York City and the Long Island Sound.
South Norwalk (SoNo) is the town’s popular restaurant and retail center and is a recognized historic district. It’s also home to some of the more eclectic architecture, with 18th century brick clad buildings that line Washington Street.
The popular Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk provides entertainment for all ages and Stepping Stones Museum provides hands-on activities for children aged 10 and under. For those seeking water adventure, the Sheffield Island Ferry provides tours of the 1868 lighthouse with amazing views of the coast and Long Island Sound.
With a variety of unique neighborhoods, there is always something to do in Norwalk. The downtown district offers an exciting scene of food and nightlife, while the town’s two sandy beaches and several ponds, a variety of golf courses, tennis courts and wonderful parks provide residents with a wealth of recreational opportunities.
For those who need to commute to the city, Norwalk has four Metro-North stations: three on the main line of the New Haven route (Rowayton, South Norwalk, and East Norwalk) and a fourth on the Danbury Branch (Merritt 7).
With the majority of homes priced under $1 million, Norwalk provides a desirable lifestyle at relatively affordable prices compared to its neighboring towns. From historic houses which were once occupied by renowned writers and artists to sophisticated and wealthy communities with incredible views of the Long Island Sound, you can find a home for any budget.
There are also a variety of neighborhoods to fit a wide array of tastes. Heading North, West Norwalk is a largely residential community where you can find mid century modern gems tucked away in the woods. Silvermine evokes the era of an artist’s colony with windy old country roads lined with trees. Across the river, you’ll find Cranbury, which has a more rural feel, perhaps because it's home to the Gallagher estate, which is a nature preserve and provides beautiful hiking trails.
East Norwalk, which borders Westport, features tree-lined neighborhoods that spark a nostalgic suburban 1950s feel. Closer to the beach, the houses grow larger and more stately as commanding views of Norwalk’s harbor, islands and the Long Island Sound were the original draw. Rowayton, the town’s coastal village with a host of beaches and charming eateries, typically draws higher price points.
