If you live in New York City, the thought of moving to the suburbs might feel overwhelming. But you don’t need to give up all of the things that you love about NYC -- whether its the food, the culture, the energy or the convenience.

From lively downtowns to convenient commutes, here are the top towns in the NYC suburbs for easing into suburban life.

Tarrytown, NY

Named one of the prettiest towns by Forbes, Tarrytown’s appeal goes beyond its picturesque location on the Hudson River. This lively and walkable village is full of diverse dining options, arts & entertainment and boutique storefronts. You can stay within town and enjoy the mom and pop shops or opt for more brand name stores within 15 minutes such as Trader Joes, or Target. And there is no shortage of green space from the Riverwalk and the OCA, to the Tarrytown Lakes Park.

The express train from Tarrytown gets you to Grand Central in about 40 minutes.

White Plains, NY

As a central hub to Westchester, White Plains has the perks of city living with suburban appeal. It is home to many young professionals who live, work and play all within the city limits. Here you will find brand name restaurants, first class malls, cultural scenes, and night life that keep you entertained no matter the occasion.

As a major stop on the Metro North line, you can easily get to NYC within 40 minutes.

Greenwich, CT

Greenwich has a lively and sophisticated cosmopolitan vibe, with world-class dining, restaurants and cultural events. The town’s main retail district, known to locals as “The Avenue” has many of the same shops you are used to seeing in New York City, such as Saks Fifth Avenue, J. Crew, lululemon and Tory Burch. With local events such as the Greenwich International Film Festival and the Greenwich Wine and Food Festival, there’s something for everyone.

Close to downtown, you’ll find the Greenwich train station which offers an express train to Grand Central in less than 50 minutes.

Stamford, CT

In Stamford, you can enjoy an energetic lifestyle without sacrificing your big-city dreams. Downtown offers a flourishing restaurant and nightlife scene, as well as an abundance of recreational opportunities. Stamford also offers a Manhattan-like vibe with off-Broadway musicals, operas and ballets and plenty of options for music and entertainment.

Located directly on the Long Island Sound, the Harbor Point section of Stamford is considered a “Live-Work-Play” community with an abundance of shopping and dining options. The Harbor Point Trolley is the most exciting way to get around the city, which runs everyday and makes 14 stops throughout.

The Stamford express train gets you Grand Central in about 55 minutes.
